Ambegaon Cool Farms
Around 50 km from Pune is the village of Ambegaon. To many, Ambegaon is known only for its agriculture. The village which is near the Pune Nasik Highway and comes under the Khed taluka is known for its abundance in growing potatoes, wheat, bajara,jawari and rice. Fields surrounded by the green Sahayadri hills characterise most of Ambegaon. And it is this large scape of greenery that makes it an ideal tourist destination.
Ashok Bajare, a potato farmer in the area, calls the place “the next agro-toursim destination.” Bajare's potato farms along with others in the area have put around 6000 acres of Ambegaon's land under potato farming. “ That is why you should visit this village,” he says, adding, “This place is like Mahabaleshwar. The temperature does not go beyond 10-15 degrees and clouds hover around during monsoons. It’s a pretty sight.”
Beyond the scenic beauty Ambegaon also offers a lesson in village life. A visit to the place ensures that you are exposed to a wide variety of flora. “Have you ever seen potato flowers?” asks Bajare. Most of the village during this time is covered with flowers by the potato growth, which according to Bajare is a rare event. The potatoes grown here are sent to bigger cities for manufacture of potato chips. The upcoming airport at Rajgurunagar will make it more reachable, besides the already well connected road network that leads to it.
The Pune-Nasik highway divides the area into east and west. The place has two very old temples, Vedeshwar temple on the bank of river Vede is a tribute to Lord Shankar. It is situated on a height and is more than 150 years old. Similarly, the Sauranginath temple of Datta Bhagwan is 100 years old. Situated on a hill, one can drive half the distance after which one has to trek up. The otherwise quiet place sees a lot of visitors on Mondays and Thursdays to visit the temple. One can reach Ambegaon by road and the state transport buses. If you plan to stay there for more than a day, the highway offers a few good options, though inside the village there is no place for accommodation.
