PAWANKHIND: Royal Grandeur
The Mughals were in search of Chhatrapati Shivaji and Bajiprabhu who had already set up an electrifying pace on their horses to reach Vishalgad en route a narrow pass Ghod Khind which was later renamed as Pawankhind. It was a narrow opening which could let in only a few men at a time. The horses were fatigued by the time they reached there. This was the pass where Bajiprabhu decided to hold back the Mughal army to help Shivaji reach Vishalgad safely. The valour of Bajiprabhu Deshpande came to a gory end as he combated several soldiers alone. Later Shivaji renamed the pass as Pavankhind - that was purified by Bajiprabhu’s blood. The escape route from Panhala Fort to Pawan Khind was 75 km long and extends across a portion of Kolhapur. Pawankhind lies on the way to Vishalgad from Panhala with picturesque terrains all the way. And Pawanakhind replete with history offers a good way to spend a holiday. The best way to reach Panhala is by the ST buses available from Swargate and Kolhapur apart from the regular treks. For trekkers, it is a medium level trek on the scale of difficulty. There are a few expected hazards such as the ankle-deep mud, leeches and the sudden mountain streams which burst banks due to the heavy rains. Porters are available from Panhala itself. It is a long trek - Four days and three nights - and temples and schools are the perfect place to spend the nights.
The best season to be there is November-February when the rains have bloomed all the flora, including the lush green stretch of the velvety grass. But the monsoon promises a good weather. Pandhrepani is the nearest village to Pawankhind and accommodations are available in the village schools and temples. “The villagers are always happy to help and can provide one with all necessities though they have modest means,” said Pinakin Karve, creator of Trekdi, a trekkers’ association in Pune. Apart from Vishalgad, there is Masaai Pathar, a table land stretching over five km, a dargah and a Ganesh temple in Vishalgad on the way to Pawankhind.
