Celebrate Janmashtami | Pune

t's time for Janmashtami, the festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. In Pune, the highlight of the festival is the legendary dahi handi, a clay pot filled withcurds and often with money. Celebrated with aplomb among various mandals in the city, the handi is tied to a rope several feet high from the ground with boys or 'Govinda' making a human pyramid to break it amidst chants of 'Govinda Aala re'.  In fact,  competitions are also held among these mandals, promising an entertaining treat for those watching.

AMBEGAON COOL FARMS

Ambegaon Cool Farms
Around 50 km from Pune is the village of Ambegaon. To many, Ambegaon is known only for its agriculture. The village which is near the Pune Nasik Highway and comes under the Khed taluka is known for its abundance in growing potatoes, wheat, bajara, jawari and rice. Fields surrounded by the green Sahayadri hills characterise most of Ambegaon. And it is this large scape of greenery that makes it an ideal tourist destination.
Ashok Bajare, a potato farmer in the area, calls the place “the next agro-toursim destination.” Bajare's potato farms along with others in the area have put around 6000 acres of Ambegaon's land under potato farming. “ That is why you should visit this village,” he says, adding, “This place is like Mahabaleshwar. The temperature does not go beyond 10-15 degrees and clouds hover around during monsoons. It’s a pretty sight.”
Beyond the scenic beauty Ambegaon also offers a lesson in village life. A visit to the place ensures that you are exposed to a wide variety of flora. “Have you ever seen potato flowers?” asks Bajare. Most of the village during this time is covered with flowers by the potato growth, which according to Bajare is a rare event. The potatoes grown here are sent to bigger cities for manufacture of potato chips. The upcoming airport at Rajgurunagar will make it more reachable, besides the already well connected road network that leads to it.
The Pune-Nasik highway divides the area into east and west. The place has two very old temples, Vedeshwar temple on the bank of river Vede is a tribute to Lord Shankar. It is situated on a height and is more than 150 years old. Similarly, the Sauranginath temple of Datta Bhagwan is 100 years old. Situated on a hill, one can drive half the distance after which one has to trek up. The otherwise quiet place sees a lot of visitors on Mondays and Thursdays to visit the temple. One can reach Ambegaon by road and the state transport buses. If you plan to stay there for more than a day, the highway offers a few good options, though inside the village there is no place for accommodation.

CHATURSHRINGI TEMPLE PUNE

The Chaturshringi Temple is a Hindu temple in the city of Pune, Maharashtra, India. The temple is located on the slope of a hill on Senapati Bapat Road. It is said to have been built during the reign of the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhosle. The temple is looked after by Chaturshringi Devasthan (Temple) trustees, with full dedication.
Chaturshringi (Chatur means four) is a mountain with four peaks. The Chaturshringi temple is 90 feet high and 125 feet wide and is a symbol of power and faith. One has to climb more than 100 steps to reach the shrine of Goddess Chaturshringi. In the temple premises there are also temples of Goddess Durga and Lord Ganesh. This includes eight miniature idols of Ashtavinayaka. These small temples are located on the four separate hillocks.
Like most of the temple in Pune, Chaturshringi temple also has its own tale that dates back to many centuries from now. Legend says that Goddess Chaturshringi bade a merchant in Pune to built a temple for her. The merchant who was a staunch believer of the Devi, used to visit the temple of the Goddess during his visit to other places.

KASBA GANAPATI

The Kasba Ganapati refers to both a particular idol of the god Ganapati in Pune, India, as well as to the temple built around the idol. The Kasba Ganapati is the presiding deity (gramadevata) of Pune.
The temple was commissioned by Jijabai, after Dadoji Konddeo reported to her that an idol of Ganapati had been found in Pune. The idol's status as the premier idol in Pune was decided by Bal Gangadhar Tilak[1].
In the year 1630. The Royal Queen Jijabai Bhosale arrived in Pune with her son Shivaji. Shivaji was disturbed by the pathetic plight of the mavals, at a very young age. At the tender age of 12, he vowed to liberate the mavals from the mughal powers. Around this time, an idol of Lord Ganesh was found near the house of Vinayak Thakar, close to the residence of Jijabai. Jijabai perceived this as an auspicious moment and promptly decided to build a temple, which is popularly known as the Kasba Ganpati Mandir.
Since then, Pune is also known as the city of Ganesh. The Peshwas were ardent followers of Lord Ganesh. During their regime Shaniwarwada has witnessed grand celebrations for Lord Ganesh.
In 1893, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the great freedom fighter and Cub of India, initiated the now famous Ganesh Festival. His intention was to gather people sharing similar ideas and exchange thoughts to deal with the British ruler. He started celebrating Ganesh Festival from his own house Kesari Wada. Due to his influencing personality and initiative, everyone started celebrating this festival and thus it became a public festival in 1893.
There was rivalry among the various mandals regarding the privilege of immersing the idol on the last day of the Ganpati festival. Bal Gangadhar Tilak resolved the rivalry and declared the privilege of immersion to Shri Kasba Ganpati, as it is the local deity of Pune.
Till 1925, Shri Kasba Ganpati Mandal celebrated the festival within the premises of the temple and from 1926 it is celebrated in an enclosed mandap. Presently, the ten days of the festival is a platform to display ones talents through various cultural programs thus allowing a large number of devotees to participate in the celebrations. On the last day, Shri Kasba Ganpati plays the leading role during the immersion procession. For more information on Immersion Procession.
