THE DEVRAIS

THE DEVRAIS
Small patches of dense forests adjacent to many villages in the Western Ghats are protected by residents of villages as Devrais or Sacred Forests. All these Devrais have some deities that the villagers worship and protect the forest for. One such untouched forest, Tamhini Devrai, is about 70 km from Pune near Mulshi,a few kilometres before Tamhini Ghat.

PAWANKHIND, ROYEL GRANDEUR

PAWANKHIND: Royal Grandeur
The Mughals were in search of Chhatrapati Shivaji and Bajiprabhu who had already set up an electrifying pace on their horses to reach Vishalgad en route a narrow pass Ghod Khind which was later renamed as Pawankhind. It was a narrow opening which could let in only a few men at a time. The horses were fatigued by the time they reached there. This was the pass where Bajiprabhu decided to hold back the Mughal army to help Shivaji reach Vishalgad safely. The valour of Bajiprabhu Deshpande came to a gory end as he combated several soldiers alone. Later Shivaji renamed the pass as Pavankhind - that was purified by Bajiprabhu’s blood. The escape route from Panhala Fort to Pawan Khind was 75 km long and extends across a portion of Kolhapur. Pawankhind lies on the way to Vishalgad from Panhala with picturesque terrains all the way. And Pawanakhind replete with history offers a good way to spend a holiday. The best way to reach Panhala is by the ST buses available from Swargate and Kolhapur apart from the regular treks. For trekkers, it is a medium level trek on the scale of difficulty. There are a few expected hazards such as the ankle-deep mud, leeches and the sudden mountain streams which burst banks due to the heavy rains. Porters are available from Panhala itself. It is a long trek - Four days and three nights - and temples and schools are the perfect place to spend the nights.

The best season to be there is November-February when the rains have bloomed all the flora, including the lush green stretch of the velvety grass. But the monsoon promises a good weather. Pandhrepani is the nearest village to Pawankhind and accommodations are available in the village schools and temples. “The villagers are always happy to help and can provide one with all necessities though they have modest means,” said Pinakin Karve, creator of Trekdi, a trekkers’ association in Pune. Apart from Vishalgad, there is Masaai Pathar, a table land stretching over five km, a dargah and a Ganesh temple in Vishalgad on the way to Pawankhind.

WAI TEMPLE TOWN

WAI: Temple Town
Wai may not feature among the conventional holiday places around Pune. On your way to Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar, it’s a place easy to miss. But Wai offers a refreshing change from a stereotype holiday. A detour of three km en route to Mahabaleshwar will get you to this scenic location. Wai’s ultimate selling point is the silence it offers, away from the usual tourist buzz.
Get there by road: it’s around 95 km from Pune. Or take a direct train to Satara and hitch a ride to Wai. The developed part of the town offers plenty of accommodation options. Nestled in the Sahayadri ranges, Wai was earlier known as Viratnagari. The river Krishna flows through the town, setting up scenic locations and plenty of ghats. Also known as the temple town, Wai has a number of temples - from Chakreshwar and Kaleshwar temples near Brahmanshahi Ghat to the Ganpati temple on Ganpati Aali.
What adds to the charm of the place is the little peak into history that it offers. Wai is over 350 years old and it hides inside it many small repertoires of the past. The wada of minister to the Peshwas, Nana Phadnis called Rajwada, is a beautiful place on the bank of river Krishna. Other places of interest are the Banawdikar Wada which was captured and used by Afzal Khan, Deshpande Wada and a 400-year-old wada of the Kathavate family. “These historical places make your visit all the more memorable. Especially as a lot of past architecture and style is seen,” says Kapil Shah, who had been to Wai on his way back from Mahabaleshwar recently.
On your way to Wai you can also choose and plan a lot of treks. Says Swapnil Pawar, founder of Raanvata, who has been organising treks in the area for the last eight years. “ Wai also leads to many trekking points. It is surrounded by numerous forts in the Satara district, such as Pratapgarh, Pandhavgarh, Vairajgarh, Chandan Vandan and so on.”
